Having collaborated with photographer and graphic designer Nancy Cantwell as part of her Times Quotidian project, I’ve always been struck by how central issues of relationship have been to her work. Like many creative people, Nancy is focused on a single inexpressible quality that lies somewhere within the domain of the relation. Whether she is engaging in photographic observation, juxtaposition, or subject recognition, or looking at how historical perspective affects messaging and graphic content, she offers proofs of experience that can be read in a variety of ways. Her singular images contain multiple veneer treatments. While they may contain serial subjects, her vision is singular united by this focus on connection, hidden discourse and binary representation.
